Bill Scheide Remembered for His Work As Civil Rights Commissioner for 20 Years

To the Editor:

I am writing to pay tribute to William H. Scheide …. Kudos for a life well lived in service to others. I was appointed executive director of the Princeton Joint Commission on Civil Rights and held the position for 20 years. Bill served as a commissioner during the entire time. He rarely missed a meeting, was a caring, conscientious and dedicated member, and even served as secretary, taking the minutes for the Commission.

We tackled many issues including some in the Princeton Public School system, employment opportunities and guidelines, housing enforcement laws, police-community relations, and monitored Civil-Human Rights laws, to name a few.

Bill Scheide was always in the forefront of all the work of the Joint Commission. He was a true civil rights activist, a humanitarian and an honorable man who worked for the underserved and everyday people of Princeton. He put his money where his mouth was.

Rest in peace dear and faithful friend!
